Mark Twain
Writer and globetrotter. Traveled the Neckar on a raft.
Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on 30.11.1835 in Florida, died on 21.04.1910 in Redding During a trip through Germany and Europe in 1878, Twain spent some time in Heilbronn and, motivated by observing the raftsmen on the Neckar, Mark Twain wanted to travel the Neckar himself on a raft. “The motion of a raft is just right; it is smooth, gliding, gentle and noiseless; it calms all feverish bustle, lulls to sleep all nervous haste and impatience; under its soothing influence all anger, vexation and sorrow that torment the mind vanish, and life becomes a dream, a spell, a deep and silent rapture.” (Stroll through Europe, Mark Twain).
The experiences and impressions of this journey from Heilbronn to Heidelberg are the inspiration for Twain's novel Huckleberry Finn.
It is not known whether the Neckar not only inspired writers but also had an influence on the spirit of invention, but it was home to many a pioneer.
